Description

The Summerred Apple Tree is a variety of medium vigour. It produces medium-sized fruits, with 3/4 red and 1/4 yellow colouring. Their semi-firm flesh is fine, juicy, and slightly acidic. They are very refreshing. Harvest takes place in mid-September. The fruits can be stored for 3 weeks to 1 month. The Summerred Apple Tree is not self-fertile.

The apple tree is native to Europe, particularly in France where its presence has been documented since antiquity. The Summerred Apple Tree is a variety resulting from a Canadian cross-breeding between the McIntosh and Golden Delicious varieties.

The Summerred Apple Tree is an upright tree, giving it a very elegant and slender appearance. It has regular and consistent productivity. In the case of high productivity, pruning is necessary to avoid small fruit size and the occurrence of diseases.
Its foliage consists of large, ovate, slightly fuzzy leaves that are dark green on top and whitish green underneath, with deeply toothed edges.
The white flowering occurs in April. The flowering is not afraid of frost. The apple tree is therefore suitable for cultivation in all regions. Self-sterile, the presence of apple trees with flowering at the same time is necessary. The varieties 'Alkamene' and 'Globster' are the most suitable.
Fruit production begins in mid-September. The fruits can be stored in a cool place (cellar or refrigerator) for 3 to 4 weeks. They are medium-sized, with 3/4 red and 1/4 yellow colouring. Their semi-firm flesh is fine, juicy, and slightly acidic. They are very refreshing.

These apples are particularly good for eating. They can also be used in pastries, jams, jellies, or in savoury dishes, paired with Normandy cheeses, for example.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny spot for your Summerred Apple Tree, the soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but without excess. Dig a wide planting hole at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (topsoil, compost) and a base fertilizer like crushed wood. Do not bury the grafting collar. Stake if necessary. Water abundantly, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside the freezing period. Container-grown plants can be planted all year round, except during periods of high heat or frost.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during winter, this will improve fruiting. Watch out for possible aphid attacks during the season. A white powdery coating caused by a fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, which does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only store picked fruits. Apples are stored with the stem downwards, on shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry and cool place, but frost-free.

Care

Pruning instructions The pruning of your apple tree can be limited to a simple thinning of dead or obstructive branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, resulting in a goblet-shaped habit, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In any case, make sure to leave some spaces in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light penetration. Don't hesitate to thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps achieve a better size.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
