More information

An annual but frost-tender grass, of modest size (30 to 40cm (12 to 16in)). It grows in a dense clump of long and slender upright leaves, which are green with a bluish tint. In late summer, a multitude of feathery and slender flower spikes appear, changing from ruby-pink to pink and then to white-pink. This graceful and colourful flowering is highly valued in floral art and remarkable in the garden. Outside mild climates, Melinis nerviglumis is grown as an annual or in pots to overwinter frost-free. Give it sun and well-drained, poor, sandy soil that is dry in summer. Hardiness: to -5°C (23°F) at the tip.

Description

Melinis nerviglumis (synonym Melinis rhynchelytrum) is a lovely little perennial grass originating from sub-Saharan Africa. It is relatively unknown to European gardeners, but highly prized in floral art. This sensitive plant grows in a dense clump of green foliage with a bluish tint, much like a blue fescue. Its late flowering, ranging from dark pink to white-pink, is delightful. A graceful and colourful 'herb' that will bring charm to seasonal flower beds. Outside of mild regions, it is easily grown as an annual or in pots to overwinter indoors and protect from frost.

Melinis nerviglumis belongs to the Poaceae family. It is native to the dry regions of Africa, where it thrives in well-drained soils. It is not very resistant to frost (down to -5°C (23°F) at its lowest), but it is perfectly adapted to poor soils and seasonal droughts. The vegetation persists in mild climates during winter, but dries up elsewhere.

This non-invasive grass forms a dense clump of upright, thread-like, pointed leaves that can reach a length of 35 to 40cm (14 to 16in). It occupies about 35 to 40cm (14-16in) in all directions. The leaves are a bluish-green colour, sometimes turning reddish-purple towards the end of the season due to cold temperatures. Flowering occurs in late summer, starting from mid-August (later or earlier depending on the climate). Thin, slightly arched floral stems, about 50cm (20in) tall, emerge from the foliage, carrying very thin and upright to trailing inflorescences that remain decorative on the plant for a long time. They are dark pink when blooming. The colour changes through different shades of pink, becoming almost white when mature. This flowering beautifully captures the sun in early autumn. Seeds form after pollination, which are sought after by certain birds.

Melinis nerviglumis deserves to be more widely used in seasonal flower beds and for patio decoration, similar to Pennisetum x advena 'Rubrum', which is much better known. In a summer flower bed, it pairs perfectly with Ammi visnaga and tall, undemanding asters (Aster turbinellusA. laevis), for example. Also consider planting it among tall sedums (Sedum matrona, S. 'Septemberglut') and cosmos to create a beautiful late-season scene. It is also a very attractive companion for repeat-flowering roses, catmints, and lavenders.

Planting and care

Melinis nerviglumis fears 4 things: cold, excess moisture, heavy soils, and shaded places where it quickly withers. Dig a good-sized planting hole (40cm (16in) in all directions), place a layer of gravel at the bottom (if required), and use a mixture of compost, soil, and sand for the plant. In well-drained, sandy, poor soil, in full sun, it can withstand winter temperatures of around -5°C (23°F) for a very short period. If August is very dry, water your grass to help it flower.

Cultivating in pots is easy in a mixture of compost/garden soil/sand. Choose a container of at least 7 litres, with drainage holes in the bottom. The pot can be brought indoors in winter to a bright room kept frost-free but not too heated. Reduce watering in winter without allowing the substrate to completely dry out. Divide your grass every three years to regenerate it.
