Hemerocallis 'Ruby Spider' is a splendid variety of Daylily with immense spider-like flowers with an exotic appearance. They are bicoloured, with spoon-shaped petals that are ruby-red infused with yellow, arranged in a star shape around a wide yellow throat. Very floriferous and robust, it is a trouble-free perennial, guaranteed to succeed. A feast for the eyes that will certainly turn heads!
The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. They are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous or sometimes semi-evergreen foliage. The 'Ruby Spider' variety stands out for the size of its flowers and the particularly harmonious distribution of its vibrant colours. It forms a fairly dense clump that will reach a height of 75 cm (30 in), with a relative spread of 80 cm (32 in). Daylilies tend to spread a bit when they like the soil. The impressively large flowers measure approximately 22 cm (9 in) in diameter. The petals of this variety are elongated and spatulate, and gracefully curved. They create a chromatic struggle between the dominant bright yellow at the heart of the flower, the intermediate orange, and the ruby-red that darkens towards the outer parts of the floral parts. Each flower appears as though it were hand-painted by a particularly inspired artist, and the overall impression is vibrant and harmonious. Each flower lasts only a day, but flowering renews continuously over a beautiful period between July and August. The stems are sturdy and adorned with numerous buds. The foliage is linear and deciduous. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate drought well but are more floriferous and opulent in moist soil.
Very easy to grow, these plants thrive both in shade and in full sun. Some of them can be a bit invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn after flowering. The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial plant", due to its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also because of its lack of modesty: it is beautifully exuberant and blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Ruby Spider' will fit in perfectly in the setting of a contemporary or wild garden, with grasses, dwarf bamboos, Nandina or perennial flaxes by its side. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be provided, choosing from among the dwarf varieties. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Botanical data
Plant your Hemerocallis 'Ruby Spider' in a good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, and it does not attract rodents. Hemerocallis thrive both in partial shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. Do not plant them too closely to each other if you are planting multiple plants, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, it is advisable to keep the soil fairly moist. Divide the clumps preferably in autumn after flowering.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
