Description

Narcissus 'Sagitta' is an early variety, which bears pretty flowers with pale-yellow petals shaded with green and a salmon-pink centre, perched at a height of 40cm (16in). This daffodil blooms from March.

Its green foliage is deciduous. The leaves are shorter than the flower stem, as they reach a length of 30 to 35cm (12 to 14in). This variety reaches a height of 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in) when fully grown. Its blooms can be placed in a vase, but it is best not to mix them with other flowers.

Narcissus flowers are increasingly appreciated today because they are synonymous with spring. Their bulbs are toxic. They do not tolerate inclement weather such as rain, which damages the flower. Nevertheless, they are among the most resilient autumn bulbs. They are a faithful plant that returns every year.

Narcissus comes from a Greek legend in which a handsome young man rejected the love of the nymph Echo. As punishment, the gods made him only love his own image. When he perched above a fountain to drink, Narcissus saw his reflection and remained in contemplation of it until he drowned. He then transformed into a flower.

Planting and care

Place Narcissus 'Sagitta' in full sun or partial shade. Very easy to grow, it adapts well to the shade of the undergrowth as well as to a sunny flower bed. It prefers moist but well-drained soils. Plant the bulbs in autumn, 15cm (6in) deep and spaced 10cm (4in) apart. Group them in clusters of at least 5 bulbs, in patches of uniform colour or mixed.

You can plant them in lawns. In this case, lift the turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20cm (8in) (the length of a spade). Plant your bulbs, cover with soil and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't mow, as the daffodil leaves must wither before cutting them. The bulb uses the leaves to rebuild itself and prepare the flowers for the following year. However, remember to cut the flowers as soon as they fade to avoid seed formation. This would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb.

Cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser at that time, not before. Maintain regular watering during the growing season and then let the soil dry out once the foliage is mature.
