Satisfied with the quality of these bulbs, but we will have to wait until spring to make a more definitive assessment...

Description

The Tulip 'Flaming Margarita' double early variety seduces with the grace and elegance of its flowering carried by tall stems. From the early days of spring, it stands out from other tulip varieties with its flowers of an unprecedented colour. The cream-white petals are marked in the centre with reddish-purple flames, as if a painter had applied the touch of a brush. Resistant to bad weather, it is ideal for flower beds and bouquets. Its flowering follows that of early single tulips.

The Tulip 'Flaming Margarita' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, this new Dutch introduction belongs to the group of early doubles, whose main characteristic is to bloom at the same height, making it a category appreciated by enthusiasts of well-organised flower beds. Perched on strong stems of 35-45 cm (14-18in), just above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the double flowers, 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5in) wide when fully open, unfold into a dense and colourful array of petals. With a superb colour, the flowers are composed of cream-white petals slightly streaked with red and violet, with yellow towards the centre. The flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season. The foliage, composed of beautiful glaucous green lanceolate leaves, yellows and then dries a few weeks after flowering, while the bulb enters a dormant state.

Early double tulips bring originality to your flower beds or bouquets, while combining the qualities of good performance and resistance to climatic hazards. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make gorgeous cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. The Tulip 'Flaming Margarita' is easy to incorporate, as it fits into all styles of gardens. In a contemporary garden, it pairs for a wonderful contrast with the Triumph 'Fontainebleau' or the early double 'Palmyra'. With its double flowers in pink, mauve, and white, it will bring charm to a romantically inspired garden alongside tender pink tulips like the early double 'Foxtrot' or the early double 'Flashpoint'. In a natural garden, forget-me-nots, wood hyacinths, or grape hyacinths will enhance its warm hues.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Flaming Margarita' tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
