Description

Alstroemeria Inca Serin is a variety that stands out for its flowering in rich and refined colours, in shades of salmon pink and yellow, punctuated with brown. You can enjoy it from June to October. It has a compact habit, ideal for pots and for the front of borders. Highly appreciated by florists, it is stunning in bouquets.

Belonging to the family of Alstroemeriaceae (Liliaceae), Alstroemeria or, more simply, Peruvian Lily or Inca Lily, is a perennial with tuberous roots. Its funnel-shaped flowers are quite similar to Lily and Orchid flowers. They are clustered above upright stems, adorned with deciduous green foliage. The Inca Serin variety is semi-dwarf, with a compact habit, reaching an average height of 45cm (18in) and a width of 40cm (16in).

Hailing from South America, the Inca Lily has retained a pronounced preference for warmth. Therefore, it should be planted in a warm and sheltered location, in full sun or partial shade in regions with scorching summers. It thrives in light, deep, well-drained, and humus-rich soil. Its root system may be a bit slow-growing in the first few years, so be patient... it takes some time for it to establish itself.

It is moderately hardy (down to -7°C (19.4°F)), and if grown in a pot, it should be protected during winter. In gardens located in regions with harsh winters, we recommend generously mulching the base before the arrival of the first frost.

To encourage its long flowering period, remember to remove faded flowers, but the Alstroemeria is so elegant in bouquets that it may not be necessary.

In the garden, it is an easy plant to combine within a mixed border, with other perennials such as Crocosmia 'Walberton Yellow' and Digitalis 'Suttons Apricot'.

Planting and care

You will plant your Alstroemerias in a warm and sheltered position, ideally in a light, deep, well-drained and humus-rich soil. If your soil is very heavy, it is advisable to mix in some sand and compost. Its root system may be a bit slow in the first few years, so be patient... it needs some time to establish itself. Planting should be done in late spring, once all risk of frost has passed.

Alstroemeria is moderately hardy (up to -7°C (19.4°F)). When grown in a pot, it should be stored frost-free during winter. In the garden, in regions with harsh winters, we recommend generously mulching the base before the arrival of the first frosts.
