Our selection of Mertensia. The oyster leaf, vegetable oyster or Mertensia maritima, is an edible and ornamental perennial plant with flavours of the sea. It appeals to gardening enthusiasts as well as gourmets. This small coastal plant, known for its iodine flavour, produces delicate blue-green foliage and sky-blue bell-shaped flowers. Its cousin, Mertensia virginica, also known as Virginia bluebells, brightens shaded areas with its lavender bells. Less known Mertensia sibirica thrives in cool and humid climates.
Native to northern shores, Mertensia belongs to the Boraginaceae family, like borage and forget-me-nots. This plant can reach 15 to 30 cm in height, depending on the variety and has fleshy foliage.
Mertensia thrives in well-drained and rich soils, as well as in sunny or semi-shady locations. It is hardy and robust and can be grown in a pot, in an edible garden, or as a border plant. Discover all our varieties.
