This tree has given rise to several beautiful varieties. Magnolia soulangeana ‘Lennei’ captivates with its deep flowers tinged with purple-violet, while ‘Rustica Rubra’ reveals an intense pink hue. Magnolia soulangeana ‘Alba Superba’ will brighten the garden with pure white.
Resulting from the cross-breeding of two Asian species, Magnolia x soulangeana is highly cold-resistant. Its habit is generally broad and spreading, flowering between April and May on bare branches, and its large ovate leaves turn yellow in autumn before falling. Less demanding than many other magnolias, "soulangeana" varieties thrive in rich, moist, and well-drained soil. Plant them in full sun or partial shade, sheltered from cold winds. Hardy down to -15°C, they are perfect as standalone specimens or in mixed borders.
