Description

Butterfly Pea or Blue Pea, also known by its Latin name Clitoria ternatea, is a short-lived perennial of the pea and bean family and is cultivated in Europe as an annual. It is a fast-growing, vigorous (up to 3 m/9.8 ft high) climbing vine native to tropical Asia. From July-September, it produces many blue flowers with white throats tinged with yellow that measure up to 5 cm (2 in) in diameter.

The plant gets its Latin name from the similarity of the shape of its flowers to the female sex organ. For this reason, the beans that follow the flowers are consumed in Asia for their so-called aphrodisiac properties.

In Europe, this plant is grown for its decorative aspects. It is ideal for covering a trellis in a sheltered corner of the garden or as a perennial in a veranda.

Ecological value: it attracts bees and butterflies to the garden.

Plant Butterfly Peas or Blue Peas in a warm, sheltered corner of the garden. They will need rich, well-drained soil. Despite their exotic origin, they are easy plants to grow.

Planting and care

Before sowing, gently scratch the surface of the seed to encourage germination. From February-April, sow the seeds on the surface of a special seed starting mix. Cover them with a 5 mm (0.2 in) layer of soil or vermiculite. Place the seedlings in a mini-greenhouse or seal them in a polyethylene bag. Maintain at a constant temperature of 20-25 °C (68-77 °F) until germination, which usually takes 14-21 days. Do not deprive the seedlings of light, as light helps germination.

When the young plants are large enough to be handled, prick them out into 8 cm (3.1 in) pots.

Harden off the young plants to cooler conditions for several weeks before planting them outdoors, after all risk of frost has passed, spacing them 30 cm (11.8 in) apart. Grow them in a well-lit area, but away from direct sunlight if they are grown on a veranda.

By removing wilted flowers, you will encourage reflowering and extend the flowering period.
