Discover here the tall Astilbes, varieties that exceed 1.20m (4ft) in height when flowering. Like the riverside astilbe (Astilbe rivularis) that can reach 2.50m (8ft) or the Chinese astilbe (Astilbe chinensis), these beautiful perennial plants of moist soil offer large feathery panicles in summer that can be seen from afar. Their panicles come in different shades of white, pink, mauve, or purple. Spectacular, the Astilbe rivularis 'Grandiflora' can reach a height of 1.70m (6ft) under good conditions and produces large airy inflorescences that rival the beauty of those of goat's beard (Aruncus dioicus) which enjoys the same environments. Also discover Astilbe chinensis var. davidii, whose fluffy pink lilac panicles stand at 1.50m (5ft) from the ground. They thrive in semi-shaded situations, without direct sunlight, and are very cold resistant. In addition to flowering, the foliage, more or less divided, is often decorative, although it disappears in winter.
