Originating from America, Bouteloua was discovered in the 19th century by Spanish botanists, Claudio and Esteban Boutelou. They thrive in dry soils, even poor and sandy ones, in full sunlight. In heavy soil, they do not live for long, so it is advisable to plant them in a rockery or on a south-facing slope.
