Asarums are perennial ground cover plants of montane understory with often evergreen, heart-shaped foliage that is always decorative. The flowers are always hidden under the foliage, which is why it is recommended to plant asarums at an elevated position to have a chance of seeing these curiosities. Asarums grow in shade and appreciate cool to moist, humus-rich and well-drained soils. Plant them alongside epimediums, hostas, Hakonehloa, or heucheras.
