Thanks to their remarkable bark, decorative wood bushes, often coloured in bright red, orange, or yellow shades on young branches, bring the garden to life in the heart of winter even in very gloomy weather! These vibrant colours stand out wonderfully under the rays of the low winter sun. Depending on the species, it is either the young branches that are the most colourful (they should be pruned short at the end of winter, like the Cornus alba 'Sibirica' with its blood-red branches), or the trunks whose remarkable bark reveals itself with the age of the tree, like the "snakebark" maples or the small Acer griseum, whose cinnamon bark peels off as it ages. Birch trees are also highly appreciated, like the Himalayan white birch (Betula utilis jacquemontii) with its snow-white bark, a marvel when planted in groups, surrounded by Hellebores and snowdrops at its base!
