A number of shrubs are distinguished by their ability to produce nectar and/or pollen in large quantities. They are often plants chosen for their fragrance but above all for providing high-quality food to pollinating insects at various times of the year. If the lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) will delight visitors in April, the chaste trees (Vitex) will do so in August-September, and the Japanese mahonia sometimes as early as January. Domestic and wild bees, who can rely less and less on wild flowers, will thank you for planting these species. You will also benefit if you decide to add beehives to harvest delicious honey.
