Blackcurrant bush

The Blackcurrant bush – Ribes nigrum – from the Grossulariaceae family, is a bush close to the gooseberry that produces clusters of tangy and slightly tart black berries - blackcurrants. It thrives in moist, rather acidic soils rich in organic matter. Not always self-fertile, it pollinates between varieties like the famous tandem Blackcurrant Noir de Bourgogne and Géant de Boskoop. Particularly appreciated in jellies, sorbets and tarts, its acidity can be tempered by the sugar of raspberries or strawberries. Blackcurrant is rich in iron, calcium, and vitamin C. Its foliage, highly aromatic, is used in perfumery.
