The alyssums are very popular rockery plants. We all know the golden basket (Alyssum saxatile), a beautiful golden cushion in spring that flows over rockeries and stone walls. This genus of the Brassicaceae family includes a total of 170 species of annuals, perennials, and shrubs, a vast tribe of low-maintenance plants that thrive in most of our regions. Alyssums bloom in spring and early summer, in white (Alyssum spinosum), cream, and yellow (Alyssum montanum, Alyssum saxatile). The fragrance is present in the annual varieties derived from the Sweet Alyssum, Lobularia maritima, as well as in charming shades of pink, leaning towards mauve in the Lobularia Raspberry Stream. These plants thrive in full sun, they like coarse and well-drained soils, and the cracks between rocks, but they need to be watered from time to time, especially in summer, especially when grown in containers and hanging baskets. They beautifully accompany the flowering of tulips, aubrietas, and bergenias.
