The Cleomes or Spider Flower are graceful annual plants with white, pink or purple flowers, ideal for natural style gardens. Also known as Cleome spinosa or pungens, these vigorous and bushy annuals have vibrant green, palmate and divided foliage. The 3 cm (1in) wide flowers with large stamens are clustered in a 20 cm (8in) long cluster at the top of the stem. The fruit follows after the flowers, unfolding long pendulous pods of 12 cm (5in) resembling spider legs, hence its name "Spider Flower". The Cleome likes light, loose, fertile soils that are well-drained and they like sunny, warm but sheltered areas that are away from strong winds.
