Description

The Meadow-Rue with Columbine Leaves 'New Hybrids Mixed', or Thalictrum aquilegiifolium, 'New Hybrids Mixed', is a hardy perennial plant of large size, recognisable by its clouds of frothy flowers.

Native to the cool and shady meadows of Europe and Asia, the Pigamon thrives in the garden's sunny or partially shaded areas. A moist soil allows it to grow vigorously, but it is not afraid of summer heat as long as it is watered occasionally in the late afternoon.

Its bluish-green leaves, 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12in) long, are divided into obovate leaflets on either side of the central vein, with undulated edges. The resemblance to the foliage of garden columbines gave it its Latin name.

Carried by tall stems, about 1 metre (3 feet) high, the flowers are arranged in large panicles forming clouds of frothy flowers. The flowers, 8 to 10 mm (0in) wide, are mostly composed of long ray florets.

This hybrid mix presents many colours, from pure white to deep violet, and includes all shades of pink and lilac. An astonishing spectacle from June to July.

Ideal in the middle or back of the border. The flowering stems of the Pigamon are perfect for making summer bouquets.

Planting and care

Sow the Meadow-Rue with Columbine 'New Hybrids Mixed' from March to July in a tray. Use good quality soil that you will sift on the surface to bind the seed to its substrate. Before sowing, lightly press the soil with a board. Sow your seeds by scattering them. Cover the seeds by sprinkling soil or vermiculite on top, lightly press, and water generously with a fine rain. Place your tray in light, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 17°C (62.6°F) to 21°C (69.8°F). Lower the temperature at night to 15°C (59°F) to create a beneficial alternation for germination.

The seeds will take 1 to 3 months to germinate. When the plants are manageable, transplant them into 7cm (3in) buckets. Keep the soil moist but not excessive during growth.

Take advantage of the last warm days of September to plant your young plants. Choose a semi-shaded location. Add a good scoop of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 30 cm (12in) apart.

Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain beauty and promote repeat flowering.
