Hello, this is the first time I've taken small plants to grow them myself, and it's not been successful...out of the 5 plants, only 1 is still doing well! The white ones seem more resilient...but they're still small, will they flower this year? We'll see.

Description

Petunia Surfinia 'Sky Blue' is a vigorous plant with a unique habit, compact and trailing habit and excellent weather resistance. It produces hundreds of large, single, funnel-shaped flowers in a light and fresh lavender blue. Its unmatched floriferousness and beautiful heat tolerance make it ideal for hanging baskets. A generous and easy-to-grow annual, requiring almost no maintenance!

Petunia belongs to the solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial or frost-tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and all originate from the warm regions of South America. The Surfinia Petunia is a relatively recent sterile hybrid, with a trailing and weeping shape rather than an upright one, making it a magnificent plant for hanging baskets. It was created in Japan and is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.

Petunia Surfinia 'Sky Blue' forms a vigorous bushy and trailing clump, with creeping and fuzzy stems reaching 60 to 90 cm (24 to 35in). The plant flowers from May-June to October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed and it is regularly fed. Its cup-shaped flowers are large, pale blue-lilac with a discreet pale yellow throat, tightly clustered together on dense foliage. The quite hairy, dark green leaves, are ovate and pointed, with entire margins. It is vigorous and healthy. This variety has an exceptional habit and requires very little maintenance as its sterile flowers drop off on their own.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival geraniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this Surfinia 'Sky Blue' variety. Plant it in large containers or hanging baskets, creating a perfect contrast with Surfinia 'Deep Red' or 'Purple' varieties. You can also plant it in borders with grey-foliaged plants such as cerastiums, cineraria maritima, or artemisias. If you want them to stand out, plant several plants together to create an original ground cover at the base of grey-foliaged plants such as nepetas faassenii or pastel-colored annual poppies.

Plants provided measure 4 to 8cm (2 to 3in) in 5 small plug plants, 2.8cm (1in) in diameter and 4cm (2in) high, each labelled separately. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in the ground.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (Surfinia petunias can tolerate a light frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. they are very floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for petunias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking nice and extend the flowering period.
