Description

Petunia Red Carpet Collection Rimarkable is part of an innovative family of hybrids, a series of cultivars characterised by their flowers marked with a highly contrasting border around the heart of the flower, for an intensely bicolour result. The single flowers are defined by a wide border of pure white, while the flower itself is a fuchsia violet with a midnight blue centre. The plant forms a slightly trailing clump that blooms until October in containers and hanging baskets. This easy-to-grow annual quickly makes a big impact on the terrace or balcony.

Hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. Petunia Red Carpet Collection Rimarkable belongs to the Solanaceae family, it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. This variety quickly forms a dense, rounded, semi-trailing clump, reaching 35 cm (14in) high and 45 to 55 cm (18 to 22in) wide, naturally very neat. The plant flowers from May to October, provided it is well watered and regularly fed. Its cup-shaped, medium-sized flowers are always bicolour. They are densely packed together on vigorous, healthy, dark green foliage with entire edges.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival geraniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this Red Carpet Collection Rimarkable variety. Plant it in large pots or hanging baskets for a stunning result. Create a harmonious colour scheme by pairing it with a Night Sky petunia. You can also plant it in borders of grey-leaved plants like ceraistes, maritime cineraria, or artemisias. If you want it to stand out, plant several to create an original ground cover at the base of catmints or annual poppies, for example.

Note: Please be aware that plug plants are products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in sheltered conditions (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost is passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Red Carpet Rimarkable petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed; they will tolerate a light, late frost. In the meantime, you can pot them on in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. The petunias will flower from June to October. Plant them in a sunny or semi-shaded position, sheltered from the wind. They need light, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season, as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
