Description

Viola cornuta 'Sorbet XP Yellow Blue Jump-Up', a new hybrid variety of horned violet, produces plants in consistently compact clumps covered in an abundance of perfectly complementary lavender blue and light yellow bicoloured flowers, enhanced by fine black whiskers. This robust and branching variety is easy to grow and flowers for a very long period. A touch of freshness for borders, balconies or patios.

Belonging to the viola family, the horned violet, Viola cornuta in Latin, which grows spontaneously in the Pyrenees, is a low perennial plant that has given rise to many hybrids and cultivars. Often crossed with Viola tricolor, their most famous descendants are garden pansies. The 'Sorbet Yellow Blue Jump-Up' variety is a herbaceous groundcover plant 15-20 cm (6-8in) tall when in flower, with dark green, ovate and serrated leaves, forming a spreading tuft that remains decorative even in winter. This generous plant is covered in flowers from spring to autumn, with a break during the summer. Its compound flowers with 5 petals resemble those of small pansies but their petals are arranged differently. The two upper ones are large, upright, with a slightly mauve blue colour, the other three are inclined downwards, with a bright and light yellow colour, adorned with short black veins. The plant spreads quite rapidly thanks to its rhizomes and also self-seeds very easily in the garden, not always faithfully.

Horned violets are intended for flowering in low beds, borders, but also in pots and containers, where they will be associated with other spring and summer flowering plants (Forget-me-nots, Dwarf Daffodils, Daisies, Primroses, Botanical Tulips, summer and autumn asters, etc.). The flowers of horned violets are edible, so don't hesitate to decorate your plates with one or two flowers, or even to add a few to your salads to give them a touch of colour.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, into pots, containers or directly into beds.

Planting and care

Horned violets appreciate a light soil, rich in humus or compost, moist but well-drained as they fear excess moisture in winter. In heavy soil, add some sand and compost to improve drainage.

Plant horned violets in a sunny but not scorching location or under light shade.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. Feed them with a liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing season. Water regularly but without excess. Remove faded flowers to promote new flowering.
