This 14 cm Spear & Jackson forged mattock is very robust with its forged steel head and socket and its beech handle! The mattock is a basic tool, designed for weeding without the use of chemicals and working the soil on the surface. Its heavy and wide head is specially adapted for breaking up the surface and deeply opening even compact and heavy soils. Closer to a pickaxe than a hoe, it can be used to crumble and lighten the top layer of soil after digging, uproot weeds and earth up vegetables, which means gathering soil into a mound around their base or even digging shallow holes and furrows for planting. Like the hoe, the mattock can loosen the top layer of soil, to aerate it all around the cultivated plants in the vegetable garden or ornamental garden. It also helps to prevent the formation of a compacted layer that appears after watering or rain in clayey or loamy soils. This hard and compact layer, which is very difficult to rehydrate and suffocating for plants, also promotes the rise of water to the surface and its evaporation. Working the soil on the surface after watering limits water evaporation. This model is equipped with a forged steel head for better resistance to wear. Its steel socket ensures a perfectly stable connection between the head and the handle and easy replacement of the handle. With a length of 110 cm and a beech T-handle, it is a sturdy and ergonomic tool even in cold weather. Its perforated end has a galvanized hook for hanging. The wooden handle is compostable while the metal head is recyclable.

Directions for use The mattock is an essential tool, closer to the pickaxe than to the hoe. It is designed to weed the vegetable or ornamental garden without resorting to the use of chemical products and to work the soil on the surface. After digging, the gardener can use the mattock to loosen, aerate and refine the superficial layer of soil and dig shallow planting holes or furrows. The mattock will easily remove weeds and can also be used to earth up vegetables, gathering soil into a mound at the base of the plants. Clean after each use and store your garden tool away from the sun and bad weather to extend its lifespan.
