Description

Small evergreen undershrubs or deciduous perennials with delicate flowers. These beautiful shade plants will be grown in beds, or a large shaded rockery, preferably along a path to fully enjoy their great beauty. They withstand temperatures as low as -12°C (10.4°F), -13°C (8.6°F) without any protection. The highly cold-resistant western species tolerate difficult conditions, such as living in dense shade under trees, in very dry soil or in moist clay soil. The Asian species prefer a soil that remains cool and moist in summer, well-drained, rich in humus, without limestone, and also tolerate dense shade. They all grow relatively slowly, but they live for many years without any special care.

Vigorous crown with elegant, evergreen foliage. The arrow-shaped, ovate leaves, 16cm (6in) long and 7cm (3in) wide, are dentate, shiny, and marbled with dark red spots when young. The large yellow spider-like flowers sway in the wind and have pale yellow, very narrow, and arched spurs, the centre of the flower is lemon coloured.
