Epimedium Enchantress - Barrenwort

These small undershrubs with evergreen or deciduous perennial foliage are named for the delicacy of their flowers. These beautiful shade plants can be grown in flower beds or in a large shaded rockery, preferably along a path to fully appreciate their beauty. They can withstand temperatures as low as -12°C (10.4°F) or -13°C (8.6°F) without any protection. Western species are highly cold-resistant and can tolerate challenging conditions such as dense shade under trees, very dry soil, or damp clay soil. Asian species prefer soil which is consistently moist to wet in summer, well-drained, rich in humus and free from limestone, they also tolerate dense shade. They all grow relatively slowly but can live for many years without any special care.

(E. dolichostemon x E. leptorrhizum) The evergreen foliage is similar to that of E. dolichostemon. The medium-sized flowers have white-pink sepals and spurs of equal length, giving the impression of a double flower, while the small curled petals are candy pink and the prominent stamens are gold.
