Hemerocallis Gipsy Turtle - Daylily

The Hemerocallis 'Gipsy Turtle' is a low, perpetual variety ideal for borders. Hundreds of small-sized flowers bloom on a compact plant, with a velvety purple colour illuminated by a golden heart. Very floriferous and robust, this already ancient variety has proven itself: it is a problem-free perennial whose success is guaranteed!

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Liliaceae family. They are deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen, perennial and hardy plants. The 'Gipsy Turtle' variety grows in a fairly dense clump that will reach 45 cm (18in) in height, with a relative spread of 40 cm (16in). Hemerocallis tend to spread a little when they like where they are planted. The flowers measure about 9 cm (4in) in diameter, and the petals in this variety are thick and velvety in appearance. Each flower lasts only a day but repeat flowers over a beautiful period between June and July, with a plant producing 400 to 500 flowers in a season from the age of 3 years. In this variety, the linear foliage is deciduous. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots. Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade or sun. Some can be invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the shrub every four or five years, preferably in autumn after flowering. Hemerocallis are often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of their vibrant colours and their ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to their lack of modesty, as they are beautifully exuberant and blend well with other perennials. Plant them in generous shrubs at the back of your borders. All summer flowering bulbous plants can be planted alongside Hemerocallis. 'Gipsy Turtle' will fit perfectly into the composition of a red garden alongside the Achillea 'Pomegranate' or an oriental lily like the Lilium Red Twin. Large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep on a balcony or patio should be provided, and dwarf varieties should be preferred. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.
