The Hémérocalle or Hemerocallis 'Green Valley' has retained the charm of its Asian ancestors, refined wild plants but with great simplicity. Its flowers are large, with clean lines and unpretentious design. Intense, fragrant, and abundant, they display a sulphur yellow colour washed with green, whose freshness is accentuated by an anise green throat. Its flowering is abundant on an elegant plant with an airy habit, dormant in winter. This old variety is also a very hardy perennial, easy to grow, which will not disappoint in fertile and not too dry soil.
The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the Liliaceae family. These are perennial and hardy plants whose foliage is deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen. The 'Green Valley' variety, obtained in 1955, grows in a reasonably dense clump that will reach 70-75 cm (28-30in) in height when flowering, 50-55 cm (20-22in) for the foliage, with a relative spread of 60 cm (24in), Hemerocallis tend to spread a little when they like the soil. The flowers, rather star-shaped, are slightly fragrant. They measure about 15 cm (6in) in diameter; the petals in this variety are lanceolate, with a smooth and satin texture, and gracefully curved. Each flower lasts only a day, but the flowering continuously renews itself over a beautiful period between late June and late July, slightly offset towards the end of the hemerocallis season. The stems are sturdy and filled with numerous buds that continue to bloom in a vase. The foliage, bright green, is linear and deciduous. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more opulent and floriferous in fresh soil.
Very easy to grow, these plants thrive in shade and sun. Some are invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. The Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours and ability to tolerate any environment. Due to its lack of modesty, it is a beautiful vitality that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your flowerbeds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside Hemerocallis. 'Green Valley' will blend perfectly into a natural or even contemporary garden composition in the company of white or red lilies. Large pots of at least 30 cm (12in) deep on a balcony or patio should be used and dwarf varieties should be planted. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Botanical data
Plant your Hemerocallis 'Green Valley' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. Under these conditions, your perennial will tolerate summer droughts and not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, and it is unnecessary to treat. Rodents are not interested in it either. Hemerocallis thrive equally well in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If you plant multiple plants, do not plant them too close to each other, as the spaces will quickly be filled. It is good to keep the soil moderately moist for a few weeks after planting. It is preferable to divide the plant in autumn after flowering.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
