Description

The Primula acaulis or garden primrose 'Plums & Custard' bears its name due to the range of colours that paint its flowers. Derived from our perennial and native Primula acaulis, it naturally presents a compact habit, in a small cushion with a very distinct appearance, and usually blooms from January to March-April. Often grown as biennials, primroses are perfect in pots, in window boxes on a windowsill, in borders etc. These plants grow in the sun and even in shade in fertile and moist soil.

The Primula vulgaris 'Plums & Custard' is a herbaceous biennial plant of the primrose family. It is part of a series of recent cultivars that stand out for their original colours and long flowering. They are floriferous plants that form lovely, dense clusters of foliage within a few months, reaching heights of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) and widths of 25 cm (10in). They develop persistent rosettes of wavy and veined leaves, of a beautiful bright green colour. 'Plums & Custard' produces medium-sized flowers, 3-4 cm (1-2in) in diameter, that appear for 7 to 8 weeks. Gathered in perfect bouquets, they are carried by short, villous peduncles above luxuriant foliage.

'Plums & Custard' primroses are versatile biennials and really easy to grow. They deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. Colourful and floriferous, they announce and precede the return of spring. In borders or in window boxes on a balcony, these small plants are ideal companions for tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. Under deciduous cover, in rockeries and short grass meadows, they slip among snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Properties of primroses:

They are similar to the common primrose and the tall primrose: the flowers are soothing and calming, and they are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves fight against the formation of bruises, and the entire plant (especially the root) possesses analgesic, antispasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, window boxes, or directly in borders.

Planting and care

The plug plants of 'Plums and Custard' primroses should be planted in pots and flower boxes or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them if possible upon receipt, in September-October. If the planned location is not yet ready or if the conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can let them grow in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and flower boxes, use a good soil for flowering plants (geranium-type soil) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful not to overwater! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February-early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week in the watering can. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once the flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
