In the shade, it seems to have settled well under the trees in a slightly barren spot, the foliage is also lovely.

Description

Anemonella thalictroides is a perennial tuberous plant with a spreading habit forming a clump. This plant blooms from April to May and produces thin stems carrying loose umbels, made up of 2 to 4 beautiful flowers measuring 2cm (1in) in length. These cup-shaped flowers are white to pale-pink in colour. Despite its slow growth, Anemonella forms well-spaced colonies.

The deciduous and feathery leaves measure 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) long and are bluish-green in colour. They are divided into 5 to 9 ovate leaflets originating from small tubercles. These leaves resemble Thalictrum (meadow rue) and the flowers are similar to small anemones but more delicate, hence its common name "rue anemone".

Originally from forests in eastern North America, rue anemone has excellent hardiness. When mature, it reaches a height of 10cm (4in) with a width of 30cm (12in). It thrives in shaded rock gardens and rocky gardens. It can also be found in woodlands or shrub borders.

Planting and care

Place it in partial shade or full shade as it is sensitive to direct sunlight that can damage its foliage. Plant it in moist, fairly rich, humus-bearing and moderately fertile soil. Ideal in ericaceous soil. The soil should be moderately well-drained. The soil should not remain very moist for a long time to avoid tubercle rot. Beware of slugs, powdery mildew, rust, and flower smut.
