Description

The Elegance Française® Rose ('Meithatie') combines the scent of Damask roses with the perfect beauty of hybrid tea roses and the generosity of modern roses. Awarded for its numerous qualities, this variety produces large turbinate roses of a brilliant magenta and velvety pink for months, which capture a magnificent fragrance within their petals. Naturally resistant to diseases, it requires little maintenance. Whether along a path or near the terrace, in a large pot on the balcony, or even in a vase, you will enjoy their charm for a long time. The elegance and beauty of French luxury!

The Elegance Française® Rose, recently created by the Meilland house, can boast the following awards: Silver Medal Nagaoka 2017. 1st Prize Grouped Flowers SNHF 2020, 1st Prize in all regions and Perfume Award AGRS (American Garden Rose Selections) 2020, John Cecil Honor Award, Biltmore (USA) 2020. It is a classic hybrid tea rose. The plant forms an upright, ramified bush with vigorous and rapid growth. It will reach approximately 70cm (28in) in height, with a spread of 55cm (22in). From May-June until late in the season, on foliage composed of large dark green matte leaflets, turbinated roses measuring 8-10cm (3-4in) in diameter bloom. They consist of 25 velvety-textured petals with rolled edges, arranged very regularly. Their colour is a very vibrant magenta pink and their pronounced fragrance recalls that of Damask roses, with fruity and sweet notes. These roses are solitary or grouped in 2 or 3. The disease resistance of this rose is excellent. This deciduous, very hardy shrub loses its leaves in autumn. It will thrive when planted in a rich, deep soil that remains slightly moist in summer.

This modern Elegance Française Rose, with its extraordinary fragrance and long stems, is wonderful in a vase. It will find its place in the garden in a large rose bed, at the front of a shrub bed, or as a standalone specimen in a well-kept small garden. It also performs very well in a pot. The colour of its flowers easily complements pastel blooms, as well as the range of blues, purples, and violets. Consider planting it near easy-to-grow plants such as Chinese peonies, perennial geraniums (Geranium 'Blue Cloud', 'Anne Folkard', 'Nimbus', 'Orion'), bellflowers (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, perennial salvias, foxgloves... Dwarf buddleias also make lovely companions for bush roses. Its flowers can be used to create elegant bouquets that delicately perfume the house.

Planting and care

To plant your Élégance Française rose, prepare your soil to a depth of 25cm (10in) by crumbling the soil and adding a bottom amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn. Position your plant, removing it from its pot, and cover the top of the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. During dry weather, it is important to regularly water for a few weeks to promote root growth. Also, remember to feed your rose with special rose fertilizer that stimulates plant flowering. Choose a sunny location or partial shade in very hot regions.
