Many hydrangeas are capable of growing harmoniously in limestone soils, as long as they do not undergo prolonged drought, and especially if the soil is not too shallow. They indeed need a sufficiently deep soil to be able to root properly. They are particularly derived from the species Hydrangea quercifolia (the oakleaf hydrangea), H. paniculata (the paniculate hydrangea), and H. arborescens, a bush with long flexible stems.
