Description

The Gladiolus or Camborne Butterfly Gladiolus has a contrasting flower from light pink to purple throat. We deliver them in large size 12+ for the best flowering.

Butterfly gladioli are characterised by their vibrant coloured spots that resemble butterfly wings. They have tall flowering stems of about 40 cm (16in) on a base of slender leaves. They can reach about 1m (3ft) in height. They are well suited for natural gardens or cottage gardens.

They are highly valued as cut flowers. Pick the gladioli early in the morning when they have opened two or three flowers. Leave 5 to 6 leaves per stem to allow the bulb to continue its development. Remove the first two buds at the top of the flower stem. Stagger the plantings every ten days in March/April. This way, you will have flowers all summer.

Planting and care

Gladioli like rich, fertile but well-drained soils, preferably sandy. Plant in full sun. Space the bulbs or corms 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) apart, covered with 10cm (4in) of soil. Fertilise after cutting the flowers. Avoid using manure, as it promotes bulb rot. Gladioli are susceptible to frost, so they should be dug up when they have withered or immediately after the first frosts. Cut the leaves and let them dry in a well-ventilated place for three weeks. Separate the old bulbs. Store the new bulbs and bulblets throughout the winter in a cool place, protected from frost. The bulblets will flower in two years.
