Description

The 'Pop Up Purple' Tulip, still unavailable in the horticultural market, is an extraordinary and very recent variety. It forms large green floral buds, from which very suddenly emerge sumptuous double deep purple flowers with intense violet reflections, resembling peonies. Standing at the top of 50cm (20in) tall stems, they attract attention and will be irresistible in a bed of pink or white flowers. The flowering takes place quite late, in April-May depending on the climate.

The 'Pop Up Purple' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of 'late doubles', although the particular structure of its flower almost deserves the creation of a specific horticultural category. This compact tulip will reach a height of 50cm (20in) when in bloom. The flowering takes place in April-May, a little later than that of other tulips. The 8 to 10cm (3 to 4in) wide flowers are strangely constituted, probably the result of a very rare mutation. The deep and intense red-purple colour with violet reflections accentuates the unique side of its personality. The flowers last a long time in a vase or in the garden and allow to extend the tulip season until May.

With varied and tender or vibrant colours, opulent and naive flowers, late double tulips bring fantasy and romance to pots or sunny gardens, in the company of the most beautiful spring blooms. 'Pop Up Purple' pairs particularly well with blue, pink or white flowers. Do not forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for bouquets, as they last a long time in a vase, and that's where the fragrant flowers of 'Pop Up Purple' will give the greatest satisfaction. Very beautiful on a bed of lady's mantle, it is enhanced by the presence of small delicate flowers such as chamomiles or forget-me-nots.

Planting and care

Place the 'Pop Up Purple' tulips in a sunny or partially shaded spot from late September to December for spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in a light and well-drained soil that has been deeply loosened to a depth of 15cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart without touching each other to create a mass effect that will give a more decorative appearance. The care required is very easy. Simply water regularly, especially during dry winters, and cut the flower stalks after flowering. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.
