Description

The Tuberculate Commelina (Commelina dinathifolia) is a perennial plant from the Commelinaceae family. In France, it is commonly called Ephemeral because its "one-day flowers" abundantly renew from June to August.

In England, it is more poetically called "Widow's Tears". Its flowers, which fall every day, remind of tears that arise in the corner of the eye and disappear running down the cheek.

It is an easy-to-grow plant. It blooms from the first year and forms small tubercles. These can withstand temperatures down to -10°C provided that the soil is well-drained. A small winter protection allows it to withstand winters. The Commelina self-seeds very easily, ensuring its perenniality in your garden. However, choose a sunny or semi-shaded location, but above all in a well-drained, even dry, substrate.

It is an excellent ground cover that will quickly form beautiful clumps.

It is the extreme intensity of its blue color that gives it its reputation. It is indeed one of the rare flowers with such a color. Its flowers, gathered in cymes, have 3 petals forming a wide cup of 2.5 cm (0.8 in).

The lanceolate and sheathing leaves are medium green and thinner than those of other varieties, which gives them this resemblance to carnation leaves.

Planting and care

Sow Commelina from mid-January to mid-March in a seed tray. Use good quality compost. Sow your seeds thinly. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost on top or using vermiculite, lightly press down and water generously with a fine spray. Place your pots in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a minimum temperature of 16°C.

Seed germination will take 1 to 3 months. Once the plants reach a height of 5 cm (2 in), transplant them into pots. 15 days before their final planting, gradually acclimate them to a temperature of 15°C.

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good handful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 25 to 30 cm (11.8 in) apart.
