Description

The Late Single Tulip 'Flaming Crown' is a rare and truly unique variety, as each bulb produces a different flower, more or less sprinkled and/or streaked with red on a white, yellow, orange, pink, or red background, although it is a single cultivar. Whether a product of nature or human creation, these flowers with slightly puffed and tousled corollas, reminiscent of parrot tulips, form a very surprising but beautiful motley ensemble in flower beds or in a vase. It blooms in late May or early June, thus closing the tulip season like a grand finale.

The 'Flaming Crown' Tulip is a very recent cultivar. Like all tulips, it belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 5, whose main characteristic is to bloom late in the season, on rather long stems. It will reach a height of 50 to 60cm (20 to 24in) when in bloom. Perched on stems that withstand inclement weather, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the flowers are large and differently coloured, but all are speckled or streaked with dark pink or red. Flowering takes place in May - June, making it useful in the garden.

With their rich colours, sturdy and resistant flowers, suitable for both flower beds and bouquets, the reputation of late single tulips is well established. They are already among the most planted varieties. Unmatched in bringing the colour of spring to pots or sunny gardens, do not forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. Plant 'Flaming Crown' alongside a solid red corolla tulip for a perfect match.

Planting and care

Place the 'Flaming Crown' tulips in a sunny or partially shaded spot from late September to December for spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in a well-drained and deeply loosened soil at a depth of 15cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart without touching each other to create a mass effect that will provide a more decorative appearance. The care required is very easy. Simply cut the flower stalks after flowering and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them.
