Elaeagnus umbellata - Autumn Olive

Our range of Autumn Olives. It includes the wild species Elaeagnus umbellata, and cultivars selected for both their fruits and ornamental appearance. These hardy bushes, with silver-backed foliage, are appreciated for their ability to adapt to a wide variety of soils, even poor or dry, and for their discreet yet fragrant flowering in spring. They produce edible red berries in autumn, rich in antioxidants, which are also consumed by birds.

Among the fruiting cultivars, Elaeagnus umbellata 'Pointilla Sweet'N'Sour' stands out for its abundant red fruiting punctuated with white, resembling clusters of currants sprinkled with sugar. They are ideal for fresh consumption or in jam. Elaeagnus umbellata 'Fortunella' offers, on the other hand, slightly tangy yellow fruits, perfect for juices or jellies. The 'Amoroso' cultivar has been selected for its productivity and particularly sweet berries. On the ornamental side, Elaeagnus umbellata 'Red Cascade' is highly valued for its spreading habit and clusters of red fruits.

Elaeagnus umbellata is also sometimes nicknamed Chalef, Goumi from Japan, Oleaster with umbels, or Japanese silver berry.
