Description

'Amsterdam' is an elegant and refreshing, timeless variety. This tulip with its perfect corolla has bright carmine pink petals marked with a wide central white band. 'Amsterdam' is an old variety of excellent durability, becoming a great classic of spring beds and floral compositions. It flowers in the middle of the tulip season, from early to mid-spring, depending on the climate. Perfect in bouquets or for dazzling borders, in the company of pure white varieties.

The 'Amsterdam' Tulip is a Dutch creation from 1975. It belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is flowers with a narrow cup. The single flowers are perched on high stems of 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24in) above the broadly lanceolate leaves. They are bicolour bright pink and white, quite square but in the shape of a narrow cup, with six "petals" (more precisely tepals) whose interior displays the same colours. They flower in April - May, in the heart of the tulip season.

Triumph tulips are famous for their rich colours and solid and resistant flowers, beautiful in beds and bouquets and among the most planted varieties. Tulips are unmatched for bringing the colour of spring in pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for superb cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Amsterdam' Triumph tulip will grow well in soil which is moist to dry in summer. Place it in a good, sunny or semi-shaded position. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
