Description

This variety of Ice plant, known by its Latin name Delosperma floribundum Stardust, is a half-hardy perennial plant native to South Africa.

Its dark green, almost metallic-looking, succulent, mat-forming foliage (fleshy leaves rich in water) is covered with flowers from May until the first frost. It is a genuine explosion of starry, solitary, lilac-coloured flowers with large white centres that measure 2 to 5 cm in diameter.

The flowers of Delosperma cooperi will attract butterflies to your garden.

The 10 to 15 cm high plant spreads out nicely over a width of about 30 cm. It prefers well-drained soils even if they are dry and rocky, and very sunny positions. Delosperma floribundum Stardust can therefore be used in rock gardens, pots or in well-positioned planters.

Half-hardy Ice plant or Delosperma floribundum will not resist temperatures below -8 °C. It will be necessary to protect it or bring it indoors for the winter if you wish to keep it from one year to the next. Planted in a pot, it will get used to the mild temperatures of a veranda during the winter.

Planting and care

It takes 4 to 6 weeks to obtain a young plant ready for transplanting in the garden. So, sow Cooper's Purslane in March-April, broadcast on moist soil. Do not cover the seeds, and place your seedling tray in light at a temperature of 18-21°C. The seeds will germinate in 10 to 21 days. When the seedlings are strong enough to be transplanted, transplant them into 7 cm (2.8 in) pots and gradually acclimate these young plants to cooler temperatures. When the risk of frost is no longer a concern, plant your purslanes in pots or flower beds.
