A selection of less thorny Berberis shrubs for terraces or highly frequented areas. The barberry bush is a thorny shrub often used for defensive hedges. However, there are some species and varieties, such as Berberis buxifolia 'Nana', that are less thorny, as their thorns are few or underdeveloped. This characteristic is particularly present in dwarf varieties such as Berberis thunbergii ‘Lutin Rouge’, ‘Atropurpurea Nana’ with purple foliage or ‘Tiny Gold’ with golden foliage. All these plants will bring a remarkable touch of colour to borders or pots thanks to their deciduous or evergreen foliage in shades of green, gold, purple, or pink. Not to mention their radiant spring flowering in shades of yellow to orange. Their naturally rounded shape will blend perfectly into the landscape, requiring only light pruning after flowering. Low-maintenance and very hardy, the barberry bush is a robust plant that can be grown in a wide range of soils and in various climates.
