Description

Heliotrope 'Marine' is a herbaceous annual with a very bushy habit, displaying a myriad of small amethyst purple flowers with a delicious vanilla scent. Loved by butterflies, perfect for sunny summer bedding schemes and containers!

Heliotropium arborescens, sometimes called Cherry Pie plant, is actually a short-lived perennial that belongs to the Borraginaceae family. It is native to America and was first discovered growing on the Peruvian Altiplano. It occurs naturally in dry, stony soils. In colder climates, it is often treated as an annual. 'Marine' is a dwarf variety that grows to 35 cm tall, with an erect, bushy habit and dark green, deeply veined foliage. From late May to September, a multitude of small flowers form amethyst-coloured clusters.

The intensely fragrant, vanilla blooms of Heliotrope are loved by butterflies. Heat and drought tolerant, perfect for sunny summer bedding schemes and containers!

Planting and care

Heliotrope is frugal and easy to please. It can be sown regardless of soil Ph or humidity. Sow in a heated greenhouse at 20°C from February to April, covering the seeds with a 1/2 cm layer of soil. The young seedlings emerge after around 25 days. When transplanting, leave at least 25 cm between each plant and admire from May to September.
