Description

Lobelia erinus compacta 'White Lady' is a particularly compact, low-growing selection (10-12 cm tall for a spread of about 20 cm). It flowers profusely from June until September, displaying masses of small, bright white, butterfly-like blooms over bright green foliage. Perfect for filling out hanging baskets and containers!

Lobelia erinus, also known as edging lobelia, is a popular plant for containers and hanging baskets. It produces numerous slender, branched stems which come together to form soft, rounded cushions. Leaves are small and narrow, light green to dark green in colour; all summer long, they are smothered in abundant blooms. Each flower measures about 1 cm long, with a tubular base, flaring out into three large downward-facing petals and two smaller upward-facing petals. They are regularly visited by foraging insects.

Lobelia is a great edging plant for sunny borders and summer bedding schemes. It shines in containers and hanging baskets, effortlessly blending in and highlighting other summer-flowering annuals. It enjoys a sunny position, preferably shaded from scorching afternoon heat, in moist, well-drained soil. It suffers from drought, so make sure to water regularly. For extra vigour, feed with fertilizer once every so often. In the right growing conditions, Lobelia will flower continuously from early summer until October.

Lobelia seeds are best left to experienced, seasoned gardeners as they are extremely small, like fine dust.

Planting and care

Sow your Lobelia seeds from March to May in a greenhouse at 18 degrees Celsius or indoors at a depth of 0.1cm, always keeping the soil slightly moist until the seedlings germinate. It will take an average of 16 days for them to emerge. Then, transplant them in May, spacing them at least 15cm apart. Since the seeds are very small, it can be wise to mix them with sand and potting soil before sowing. Lobelia erine have a long and abundant flowering period from June to October. They thrive in non-scorching sun or partial shade, even in shade, in light and humus-bearing soils that are rather moist and well-drained.
