On this Sunday, 16/05/2016, I sowed the clover seeds in a hanging basket, placing them on top of the compost without covering them, and then sprayed them with water. I hope that's how it should be done?! I will water them every day until the leaves appear, and I will keep you updated. Thank you for the fast delivery (I received them yesterday). See you soon. Reply from Promesse de Fleurs: Yes, that's how it should be done, ideally by covering them with a bit of compost. Spraying them with a sprayer is the suitable solution. Be careful not to drown the compost.

Description

Trifolium rubens is a very ornamental species of ruddy clover that is garbed with small, downy, purple-pink flowers all summer long. They emerge above a sparse foliage of leaves that look like those of peanuts.

Native to Central Europe and belonging to the family Fabaceae (just like beans!), it is a fast-growing, bushy perennial plant that attains a height of 45-60 cm and a width of 40 cm. It flowers in summer, in the form of very small flowers that are grouped in very elongated, fluffy spikes, measuring 5 to 8 cm.

Trifolium rubens is hardy (at least down to -15°) and frugal. Place it in any free-draining soil even if it is poor. It is melliferous and is much loved by bees.

Versatile, you can use it on its own as a ground cover, or as a border plant combined with, for example, Pennistum villosum and the adorable Allium sphaerocephalon or even planted in very naturalistic plantbeds similar in design to those of the famous garden designer Pied Oudolf, accompanied by grasses, Sage and foxglove.

Planting and care

Sow from February to May, in a tray or pot on a good quality seed starting mix. Keep in a warm place in order to maintain an optimal temperature of 20 °C. Cover the seeds lightly with soil and place the container inside a polyethylene bag or in a propagator. Germination usually takes 14 to 30 days.

When the young plants are large enough to be handled, transplant them, if necessary, into pots and then gradually acclimatize them to outdoor conditions. You will plant them out in the garden when there is no longer any risk of frost, spacing them 45 cm apart.
