Extraordinary flowering in full sun, with a 15-day halt at the end of July. Very beautiful, perfect.

Description

Diascia Sundascia 'Upright Rose Pink' is part of a series of selected Diascia for their decorative and long-lasting flowering, their robustness, and their excellent heat resistance. It is a small, bushy plant with a nicely upright habit, which produces longer, stronger spikes of charming, very fresh pink flowers. They bloom from spring until the first frosts, standing out well against its small, dark green foliage. This tender perennial plant loves the sun and well-drained soils. Well known for its use in hanging baskets and containers, it is also very attractive in rockeries or low borders.

Diascia Sundascia 'Upright Rose Pink' belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family. It is a recent cultivar derived from Diascia barberae, a species native to southern Africa, specifically Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal. This tender perennial plant has an upright habit, forming a small, well-groomed bush even in the rain, reaching a height of 35cm (13.8in) with a width of 30cm (11.8in). The flowering starts in June and lasts until the first frosts. It produces clusters of fresh pink flowers with broad lips, their throats enhanced with purple, extending downward with two spurs. The diameter of the flowers does not exceed 2cm. These flowers somewhat resemble snapdragons. The foliage, deciduous to semi-evergreen in winter depending on the climate, is composed of small, heart-shaped leaves, 2cm (0.8in) long, with toothed edges, in a dark green colour. In perfectly well-drained soil, the plant can survive brief frosts down to -7°C.

Diascia Sundascia 'Upright Rose Pink' is most often cultivated as an annual plant in our latitudes. It can be used in the ground and in pots, planted en masse in borders, as a standalone or mixed with other low-growing species such as Lithodora, Silver Baskets, and Aubrietas. Given its bushy, upright, and branching habit, it will look good in flower beds, borders, ground covers, rockeries, containers, or hanging baskets, in the gaps between walls and paving stones. In a floral composition, it can be paired, for example, with Ipomoeas, Nemesias, Lobelias, and Isotomas.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered place (conservatory, greenhouse, cold frame, etc.) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Install the Diascia Sundascia 'Upright Rose PInk' in open ground or in pots, after the end of frosts, in a fertile soil to support the flowering, moist to occasionally dry, humus-rich, perfectly drained. This plant dreads stagnant humidity. The further south you go, the more the plant fears the scorching afternoon sun and dry soils. It is useful to pinch the terminal shoots to accentuate the bushy habit. Prune the faded stems after flowering. This diascia is hardy up to about -7°C, in a perfectly drained soil. In winter, outside of mild climate regions, it is preferable to shelter this tender plant in a cold greenhouse or in an unheated conservatory.
