Description

The Calibrachoa Chamaeleon Pink Passion is a brand new variety of Mini-Petunia the blooms of which change from pink to white and yellow, enriching the palette of the 'Chameleon' series with fresh, pastel colours. This colour magician produces astonishing trumpet-shaped flowers because they continuously change colour, depending on temperature and brightness. Its dense and semi-trailing dome habit, early and prolonged flowering, and ease of cultivation make this variety a fabulous annual for hanging baskets and summer containers. It will thrive in full sun or partial shade, in light, fertile, and not too dry soil.

Calibrachoa, sometimes called Million Bells, are tender perennials often grown as annuals. Very similar to petunias, they differ in the number of chromosomes that make up their genetic heritage and some morphological characteristics; their blooms are smaller, their vegetation is shrubby or herbaceous with woody stems, their growth is less significant, and they tolerate drought better. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes) and probably descend from an Argentine species called Petunia integrifolia. The 'Chameleon' series is a first in terms of horticultural selection for Calibrachoa: as its name suggests, the plant offer medium-sized flowers, single or double, with changing hues, as well as excellent floribundity and a compact, neat habit.

The Chameleon 'Pink Passion' variety quickly forms a dense mound that is wider than it is tall, measuring 25 to 30 cm (10 in - 1 ft) in height and about 35 to 40 cm (1 ft 2" to 1 ft 4") in diameter. Its hairy and branched stems are densely covered along their entire length with lanceolate, evergreen, velvety, slightly sticky, medium green leaves. The tireless flowering takes place from June until at least September. Many funnel-shaped flowers are born in the axils of the leaves; they are 4 to 5 cm (1.7 - 2 in) wide and alternately variegated and veined in various soft shades of pink, white, and yellow. Unlike petunias, these calibrachoas do not need to be pruned during the season.

The Calibrachoa 'Chameleon Pink Passion' is ideal for hanging baskets, containers, or pots, but its good tolerance of heat and drought also allows it to be used in the ground, where it forms beautiful borders and spots of intense colour in flowerbeds. It can be planted alone or accompanied by 2 or 3 other varieties of pure colours (bright pink, yellow, white) in tubs, flower pots, or planters on terraces, balconies, or patios. They are also good conservatory plants. Their combination with Euphorbia Diamond Frost, Lobularia Snow Princess, Verbenas, Surfinia Petunias, double Bacopas, and Nemesias can be stunning. The choice is vast and allows free rein to the imagination and tastes of every gardener, even inexperienced ones.

Please note: our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° (>57.2 F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Calibrachoa 'Chameleon' in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Calibrachoas will flower from June to October. Plant your Calibrachoas in a sunny location protected from the wind. They need a light and humus-bearing, but above all, well-drained soil. Do not over-water them at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excessive moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
