I replanted the 3 seedlings upon their arrival, but after a week, only one remained. I am very disappointed.

Description

The Coléus Black Prince is native to Southeast Asia. In its original environment, this plant is a perennial and forms small semi-woody shrubs, but in our climate, it should be considered as an indoor plant or grown in the garden as an annual plant.

It exhibits the characteristics of plants in the Labiaceae family (which includes Common Nettle): fleshy square stems, dentate and villous leaves on the underside.

The success of the Coléus Palisandra or "Painted Nettle" is due to its magnificent foliage, which is slightly velvety and almost black in colour.

Whether in the garden or indoors, it prefers a sunny or partially shaded exposure. Plant it in soil improved with half leaf compost or compost. Ensure regular watering, but avoid excessive moisture.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered area (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before placing them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Coleus plants are easy to grow. Plant them after the last frost, preferably in a semi-shaded or possibly shaded but bright and sheltered position. Morning sun is well tolerated, but hot exposures should be avoided. They need a light and humus-rich soil, but well-drained, and appreciate fertilizer. They are not demanding on the nature of the soil and tolerate limestone well. You can plant your coleus in pots, where they will need to be regularly watered. Apply a little liquid fertilizer every fortnight from June to September. Remove the flowers as soon as they appear to extend the life of the plant. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors at the first frost, you can extend their life for a few years. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, with good mulching in winter. Plan for light pruning in March.
