Description

Pelargonium capitatum, also known as rose-scented geranium, is a perennial and frost-sensitive species native to South Africa, widely cultivated for its essential oil with a rose scent. It forms a small spreading shrub, covered with beautifully dissected and fragrant evergreen leaves that release their scent at the slightest touch. It blooms from June to October, bearing small pink flowers veined with garnet, grouped in dense heads. This vigorous and undemanding plant grows quickly in full sun, in all types of soil, even clay.

Growing on the coasts of southern Africa, Pelargonium capitatum is a perennial shrub belonging to the Geraniaceae family, originating from numerous horticultural varieties selected for their fragrant foliage. Its bushy habit is supported by hairy stems, which lignify over time, helping the plant to reach a height of 60 to 80cm (24 to 32in) (or more) with a spread of 1 to 1.5m (3 to 5ft). The entire plant emits a scent reminiscent of roses. Its highly ornamental foliage consists of cordate-based leaves, divided into 3 to 5 lobes. They are undulate, dentate, and villous, measuring 2 to 8cm (1 to 3in) wide. Flowering occurs from June to October, in the form of dense heads containing 10 to 20 small pale-pink flowers measuring 15mm (1in). They are perhaps less spectacular than those of classic perennial or annual hybrids, but are more authentic. The two upper petals, veined with garnet, are larger than the three lower petals.

With a simple touch, Pelargonium capitatum releases a delicate fragrance and repels mosquitoes. Therefore, plant it in a pot or in the ground, in a location where you can touch it. Try planting it along a pathway or in a pot on a patio. After rainfall one day, we came across a bed of fragrant geraniums and spent a long time immersing ourselves in a symphony of delicate scents. It is one of our favourites, as you may have guessed. It is one of our favourites, as you may have guessed. In mild climates, it  perfectly withstands summer drought and requires very little maintenance, making it valuable for dry gardens, by the seaside.

Its leaves are widely used in perfumery to extract a rose essence. The flowers can be used to flavour jellies. The leaves are used in potpourri. The leaves are edible, so can even be used in fruit salads.

Planting and care

Plant your young pelargoniums in open ground after the last frosts, in a sunny position. You can also plant them in pots placed in a sheltered position, which you can take out in May. They require well-drained soil, but not necessarily very rich. Water moderately. In pots, regular watering is necessary in summer. You can keep your plants by bringing them indoors under a veranda or a cold greenhouse in winter. They can tolerate light frost, but will not survive the winter in the garden, except by the seaside.
