Description

Petunia Designer Buzz Purple is a brand-new variety with extraordinary purple-pink flowers with a vibrant lime green border and a violet centre. An improbable combination of colours that is charming in flower beds, pots and other containers. The plant forms a round, slightly trailing clump that is covered in flowers until October. This variety resists adverse weather conditions very well and is easy to grow in sunny, fertile, light, and moist soil.

Hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. Petunia 'Designer Buzz Purple' belongs to the Solanaceae family, and is closely related to ornamental tobacco, among others, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. This variety quickly forms a dense, semi-trailing clump reaching a height of 35 cm (14in) and a diameter of 50-60 cm (20-24in) (sometimes up to 70 cm (28in)), with a naturally neat appearance. The plant blooms from May to October, provided it is well-watered and regularly fed. Its modest-sized, cup-shaped flowers are almost tricolored, in purple, green, and violet, tightly packed together on small, dense foliage. The hairy, medium green foliage has entire edges and is vigorous and healthy.

No other annual flowering plant has been subjected to such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival geraniums in their splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this variety, 'Designer Buzz Purple', which will amaze all your visitors. Plant it in large pots or hanging baskets for a stunning result. It creates a perfect contrast with the black-flowered petunia Black Ray, green-flowered tobacco (Nicotiana Lime Green), or a very elegant combination with a white petunia. You can also plant it in flower beds to accentuate borders of plants with grey foliage, such as ceraistes, sea cineraria, or wormwoods. If you want it to stand out, plant several plants to create an original ground cover at the base of plants like Faassen's catmint or annual poppies.

Note: Please be aware that plug plants are products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them in a sheltered location (conservatory, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed, they will tolerate a small late frost. In the meantime, you can pot them on them in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Petunias will flower from June to October. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They arefloriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
