At home, I planted them in a pot and despite watering them, they didn't grow as much as I would have liked. However, I planted some in the ground at a friend's place and they grew well there.

Description

Scaevola aemula Surdiva White, also known as the fairy fan flower, is a fast-growing annual plant that forms a dense, beautiful dome of vegetation covered in white fan-shaped flowers. It will cover your pots in just a few weeks, bringing life to a patio or balcony from spring to the end of summer.

Scaevola aemula Surdiva White belongs to the Goodeniaceae family. Its wild ancestor is native to the southeastern coasts of Australia. It is a tender subtropical plant that is perennial in its native habitat, but grown as an annual in our climates. With its rapid growth, it reaches a height of 60 to 80cm (24 to 32in). It develops a bushy habit that is upright, compact, and spreading. Its stems are strong, flexible, and long, making it an ideal candidate for pots. The dark green foliage is thick, with a glossy and granulated surface. It blooms from April to autumn. The flowers are grouped in long spikes that emerge from the axils of the leaves. Each flower has 5 white petals arranged in a fan shape.

When grown in pots, Scaevola aemula Surdiva White requires regular watering during the summer period, but not in excess. We recommend letting the substrate dry slightly between waterings and using containers with drainage holes to prevent water from stagnating. It is a great plant for pots and containers. It naturally pairs well with its blue-flowered sister Scaevola aemula Surdiva Blue, bidens, or nemesias. It also looks stunning with Pennisetum advena 'Rubrum'.

Our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in shelters (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny or partially shaded location. They require light and humus-bearing soil, and appreciate the addition of fertiliser. They tolerate rather dry soil quite well. You can also plant them in a pot, where they will need regular watering.

They are delicate perennials usually grown as annuals. Bring them indoors at the first frost to extend their flowering into autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, with good winter mulching.

Prune lightly in March.
