Primula vulgaris Flamenco Fire- English Primrose

Primula vulgaris 'Flamenco Fire' brings something new to the world of stemless primroses, with a unique double flower shape, with fringed petals. Its bright orange petals edged in gold herald the end of winter in a blaze of glory in borders, flower beds, and containers. The show continues until April. Once popular in cottage gardens, double primroses are making a strong comeback in the form of more compact, reliable, and highly floriferous plants. They thrive in soil that stays moist and in partial shade.

Primula vulgaris 'Flamenco Fire' is a biennial to short-lived perennial plant, belonging to the Primulaceae family. It is derived from the stemless primrose found in our meadows and woodlands. This variety with fiery tones is part of a series of recent cultivars that stand out with their unique flower shapes and flamboyant colours. From February to April, it bears an abundance of blooms. It forms attractive clumps of dense, leafy foliage in just a few months, reaching a height of 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) and a width of 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in). They develop persistent rosettes of wavy and veined deep green leaves. The 3cm (1in) diameter flowers are gathered in perfect clusters surrounded by luxuriant foliage collars.

'Flamenco' primroses are versatile, reliable, and truly easy to grow biennials. They deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. Colourful, floriferous, and low-maintenance, they herald the return of spring. Perfect for pots, containers, borders, and flower beds, they even thrive in shade with fertile and moist soil, alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. Plant them under the cover of deciduous trees, in rockeries and lawns, where they can weave among snowdrops and violets. Both the leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

They have the same properties as common primrose and oxlip. The flowers have soothing and calming properties, and are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.
