Description

Primula vulgaris 'Provence' Mix enriches the range of primroses with several tender colours in shades of peach, lavender, and light purple. The colours are either solid or variegated. The single to semi-double flowers bloom from the middle of winter until early spring, displaying their large corollas among a tangle of beautifully crimped leaves, on compact plants. This mix is particularly recommended for borders and partially shaded flower beds, in moist soil. It is also perfect for decorating patios and balconies.

Primula vulgaris 'Provence' is a biennial to short-lived perennial plant, belonging to the Primulaceae family. It comes from the stemless primrose found in our meadows and woodlands. 'Provence' is a series of recent selections that stand out with their early flowering, occurring from December-January to March, the size of the flowers, and their unusual colours. They are floriferous plants that form attractive clumps of dense, leafy foliage in just a few months, reaching heights of 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) and widths of 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in). They develop persistent rosettes of crimped and veined bright green leaves, which will only flower when the plant is two years old. 'Provence' produces 3cm (1in) diameter single to semi-double flowers with a golden yellow centre. Depending on the plants, the petals are coloured peach, very pale-pink, mauve or lavender, or violet. They are gathered in perfect little bouquets surrounded by luxuriant foliage collars.

'Provence' primroses are versatile, reliable, and truly easy to grow biennials. They deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. Colourful, floriferous, and low-maintenance, they herald the return of spring. Perfect for pots, containers, borders, and flower beds, they even thrive in shade with fertile and moist soil, alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. Plant them under the cover of deciduous trees, in rockeries and lawns, where they can weave among snowdrops and violets. Both the leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Benefits

They have the same properties as common primrose and oxlip. The flowers have soothing and calming properties, and are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible in pots and flower boxes, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant in September-October, upon receipt of the plug plants. The plug plants can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. If the planned location is not ready yet, or the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use good soil for flowering plants (such as geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser. The soil should be light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously upon planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excess water! Use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Water even during winter if it doesn't rain, or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during freezing periods.

They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, at the end of February or beginning of March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Once the flowering is over, container-grown plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
