Description

Primula vulgaris 'Rubens Mixed' is an improved variety of P. acaulis that bears large double flowers in various colours on vigorous and reliable plants. It comes in pastel shades of white, cream, pale-yellow, sky-blue, and pink, as well as bolder shades including deep purple, vibrant pink, violet, and lemon-yellow. These primroses bloom in late winter and early spring, displaying their charming bouquets among beautiful plicate foliage. The Rubens series plants easily fill large colourful pots, both outdoors and indoors.

Primula vulgaris 'Rubens F1' is a short-lived perennial plant belonging to the Primulaceae family. It is derived from the stemless primrose found in our meadows and woodlands. It includes a range of recent cultivars distinguished by their vigorous growth, large double flowers, and pure colours. These floriferous plants quickly develop generous clumps of foliage, reaching heights of 20 to 25cm (8 to 10in) and widths of 30 to 35cm (12 to 14in) in just a few months. They produce persistent rosettes of plicate and veined leaves in a beautiful vibrant green.

The Rubens collection includes the following varieties:

  • Sky Blue: light lavender blue
  • Lemon Shades: lemon-yellow with a dark yellow heart
  • Pink Shades: vibrant pink
  • Rose Shades: lighter pink
  • Blue Shades: fairly deep blue-violet
  • Purple: deep reddish-purple
  • White: pure white to ivory
  • Cream: creamy-yellow
  • Light Yellow: light lemon-yellow

Rubens primroses are versatile, reliable, and easy to grow biennials. They deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. Colourful, floriferous, and low-maintenance, they herald the return of spring. Perfect for pots, containers, borders, and flower beds, they even thrive in shade with fertile and moist soil, alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. Plant them under the cover of deciduous trees, in rockeries and lawns, where they can weave among snowdrops and violets. Both the leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Benefits

They have the same properties as common primrose and oxlip. The flowers have soothing and calming properties, and are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible in pots and flower boxes, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant in September-October, upon receipt of the plug plants. The plug plants can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. If the planned location is not ready yet, or the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use good soil for flowering plants (such as geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser. The soil should be light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously upon planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excess water! Use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Water even during winter if it doesn't rain, or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during freezing periods.

They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, at the end of February or beginning of March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Once the flowering is over, container-grown plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
